Casterino ski resort, a white paradise on the Côte d’Azur!

In the Vallée de la Roya, the family resort of Casterino is a haven of peace for ski mountaineering, snowshoe hiking and sleigh riding enthusiasts. With the soft fragrance of larches, pure mountain air and stunning landscapes, the hidden treasure of the high lands offers peace and quiet at the gates of the Vallée des Merveilles, with numerous things to do

Escape and take a break from everything

Casterino, which is located in Tende, at the heart of the Haute-Roya, is a little piece of heaven at the gates of the Vallée des Merveilles, inside the Mercantour National Park.

Perched high up at 1,550 metres, the hamlet is surrounded by glorious peaks including the Mont Bégo, the Chajol, and the Monts Sainte Marie.

With its authentic mountain architecture and vast sunny plateau, it is the perfect place to take a break and relax, far from the massive structures of large alpine skiing stations.

Still, there is plenty to do, and winter sports enthusiasts will have a field day!

Ski mountaineering, snowshoe hiking or sleigh riding, there’s something for everyone!

Whether you prefer a family outing on the slopes or exploring the skiing domain, everyone can have fun at their own pace! The Casterino resort is the perfect location to get away and feel free at the heart of spectacular landscapes.

You can vary the pleasures and the skis, with cross-country skiing one day and ski mountaineering the next day.  Cross-country skiing enthusiasts can fully enjoy the thirteen kilometres of tracks. The green and blue tracks are perfect to enjoy yourself without straining, while the red track going towards the lake is dedicated to the more athletic among us.

Not forgetting the three marked routes for snowshoe hiking, which can be taken on your own or in the company of a licensed guide in Tende. As for the youngest among us, they can have fun on the sledge track. A sure way to take a break from it all, at the heart of a white natural domain!

Enjoying the simple pleasures of Casterino

Walking at the heart of a preserved nature leaves you with unforgettable memories. Watch carefully, as chamois, ibexes and marmots are an integral part of the landscape! The black grouse, also known as the blackgame, is a rare bird which likes snowy areas, and finds peace in the Vallée de Fontanalba.

The gastronomy is generous, highlighting local or Piedmontese specialities in a fairytale setting. Have a taste of our famous blueberry tart and take back a few local cheeses and other Mercantour specialities with you.

A number of inns and hotels offer their local specialities in a cosy setting. Casterino takes us back to basics, like an ode to authenticity and the simple pleasures of life.

Just a step away from Casterino, head towards the Vallée des Merveilles

The little mountain hamlet also opens onto the Vallée des Merveilles and its outstanding archaeological site.

A cosmic observatory for some, an initiatory journey for others, the Vallée des Merveilles stands out with its 40,000 rock engravings, filled with mystery.

The archaeological area of the Mont Bégo rock engravings, which is classified as a historical monument, is located between the Vallée des Merveilles and the Vallée de Fontanalba and is a likely testimony of an ancient worship, when it was thought that the mountain was a way of being elevated towards the Gods.

En nous renvoyant à l’âge du Bronze, il y a 5.000 ans de cela, ce site constitue un véritable musée de la Préhistoire à ciel ouvert !

Casterino resort, easily accessed by car or by train

Using the main road from the Vallée de la Roya, the picturesque mountain village can be easily accessed by car via the RD91 road. The haven of peace is only one and a half hour away from the coast.

However, the experience is not complete unless you take the famous “Train des Merveilles” (Railway of Wonders), which becomes the “Train des Neiges” (Railway of Snow) during the winter season.

The railway takes you through one of the most enchanting train journeys in the world. A slow travel journey, to take the time to contemplate the panoramic view on board, a moment out of time on the roof of the world, guided by nature, relaxation and serenity.
