Saint-Tropez quickly became a fortified town with four towers to protect itself from attacks: Tour du Portalet, Tour Vieille, Tour Jarlier and Tour Suffren.

The Tour du Portalet, which stands at the foot of the harbour pier, overlooking La Glaye beach, on the other side, dates back to the 15th century.
