  • Film performances transposed on stage, the MxM collective’s creations are located in a troubled area where intimacy takes on a universal dimension. Working on La Mouette, a masterpiece by Anton Chekhov, Cyril Teste and his team use immersive video and scenography, with scales, close-ups, changes in perspectives and off-screen... A visual signature that multiplies emotion!

How can we seize the most played play of the Russian playwright? By lifting the veil of unconscious motives. Cyril Teste chose to explore in particular the tormented relationship of a mother and her son. Unloved, or too little, at least not as he would like, Treplev is caught in the throes of an Oedipal attraction marked by ambivalence. The director hypothesizes that his love for the young Nina could be considered as a transfer, a way to both live and circumvent the taboo. To reveal the inner contradictions with which Chekhov’s characters are confronted, he skillfully resorted to all the power of cinematographic processes, drawing inspiration from masters of the 7th art, Thomas Vinterberg, Jean-Luc Godard and John Cassavetes. A narrative grammar that allows to juxtapose the places of the action, in different temporalities, and above all an ultra-efficient way to capture the vibration of desire, at the interface of reality and fiction.
