At the end of 1874, the English read in the newspapers about the invention of a portable kit for a ball game initially called "Spherism". With these new and flexible rules, tennis quickly gained a following. It spread to fashionable holiday resorts in England and then in France. It was first seen on the beaches, at the instigation of English tourists, then it conquered the lawns of hotels and the gardens of villas. Tennis took its place in this momentum, and was given structures all along the Mediterranean coast, with the creation of clubs and the establishment of the first meeting calendars with tournaments. The English tourist presence on the French coast proved to be crucial.
At the end of the last century, the tennis tournament in the seaside resorts had already joined horse races, regattas, pigeon shooting competitions, fox hunting and golf competitions in the elite calendar. And it is rapidly taking a central and dynamic place in the timetable (Suteau, 1998).
