Knock, a strange-looking pseudo-doctor, has taken over Dr Parpalaid's almost non-existent clientele. He gradually spreads fear among the picturesque inhabitants of the village of Saint-Maurice and the entire region and subjects them to the influence of medicine and its authority by applying a "method" intended to make his fortune: convincing the population that everyone who is well is a sick person who does not know it and finding the imaginary illness from which they suffer.
