REBETIKO

Cultural, Entertainment/recreation, Show in Mougins
  • It is a pleasure to introduce you the new programming.
Dance and puppet theatre will obviously be very present, but also theatre, music, circus and humour.

  • Visual and sound show
Conceived as an odyssey, this story takes us on a journey of images, puppets and music drawn from the rebetiko, popular music that, in the 1920s, accompanied refugees – mainly Greek – to the ends of the earth. Visual and sound show
Conceived as an odyssey, this story takes us on a journey of images, puppets and music drawn from the rebetiko, popular music that, in the 1920s, accompanied refugees – mainly Greek – to the ends of the earth. The show Rebetiko is a fiction that mixes the past with the present, which challenges this History that is constantly repeating itself of forced displacements and states that close their borders. The puppets evolve both within the castelet and video projections that give them a ghostly dimension. These refugees do not manage to integrate into the landscapes that surround them and seem crossed by a mirage, in the permanent difficulty of belonging to somewhere. The realistic manipulation of puppets underlines the humanity of the subject. The music is an original creation, rooted in the sources of the rebetiko and played on stage with a laterna, traditional mechanical piano. This puppet theatre is charged with political and moral themes: war, uprooting of populations. But it is also a wonder of poetry and aestheticism.

The opinion of the Artistic Director
Several members of this company are of Greek origin. The laterna was designed in Thessaloniki by the last Greek manufacturer; the puppets were made in Athens by the Merlin Pupett Theater. Anima Theatre is one of the most talented puppet companies in our region.
