Impressionism is such an essential chapter in the history of art that we think we know everything about it - the Salon des Refusés, its major players, the subjects of modern life. However, thanks to the research of the two curators of this exhibition, presented until 11 July 2022 at the Musée de l'Orangerie, this avant-garde appears to us in a different light: far from wiping the slate clean of the past, the Impressionist painters certainly rejected academicism, but they also loved, for example, the great figures of 18th century rococo art, such as François Boucher, whom Renoir and Berthe Morisot looked up to. And although they did not obtain the public commissions of the young Third Republic, which were entrusted to "official" painters, they nonetheless painted a great many walls: their approach to decoration and their relationship with their clients are now illuminated.
    An enlightening and original vision.
