Guided tour : Saint-Michel Basilica

Cultural, Guided tour, Historic in Menton
  • With its facade, its bell tower, its square made of pebbles representing the Grimaldi coat of arms, its majestic ramps, it is a jewel of baroque art.

At the beginning of the 17th century, Honoré II settled in Menton with the intention of making it the capital of the principality. Considering the church too modest, he decided to build a beautiful and vast building in the style of the moment, qualified centuries later, of Genoese baroque. The Vicar General of Ventimiglia blessed the building site in December 1644. On May 8, 1675, Monsignor Maur de Promontorio, Bishop of Ventimiglia, consecrated the building with great solemnity in the presence of Prince Louis I of Monaco and all the dignitaries of his court. The old bell tower, rebuilt in 1645, was deemed insufficient. It found its current appearance in 1819 thanks to the donation of the generous Mentonnais Joseph Faraldo. The style chosen is Genoese baroque.
