"Vallauris, la ville atelier"

Exhibition "Vallauris, la ville atelier, 1938-1962

Cultural, Exhibition in Vallauris

  • It is to the effervescence of the production of ceramic works in the 1950s in Vallauris that the museum is dedicating its major event of the summer of 2021, highlighting the attractiveness of Vallauris and its know-how in ceramic creation.

If from the end of the 1930s, after a long period of lethargy, the former pottery town saw the arrival of several artists trained in schools of fine or applied arts, such as André Baud, Roger Picault and Roger Capron, it was undeniably the installation in 1948 of Picasso in Vallauris (until 1955) which gave it a new impetus by attracting a new generation of creators. Many painters and sculptors came to Vallauris to practise the arts of fire and the mastery of clay, working together with the technicians of the Vallauris workshops, including the famous MADOURA workshop created
created in 1938 by Suzanne Ramié. Among the most famous of these artists, curious to discover a new material, are: Matisse, Chagall, Cocteau, Brauner.... They were also joined by their friends, poets or writers, such as Éluard, Prévert, and many others. For 10 years, Vallauris was transformed into a real workshop town that bubbled with meetings, new ideas and experiments, initiatives, ... and parties.

The exhibition "Vallauris, the workshop town" is divided into four
parts. After a first section devoted to "The emergence of a new generation (1938-1946)", it is the "artistic profusion" of the 1950s that will be addressed, through the creations of a young generation of artists and designers - not necessarily ceramists at the outset - who set out to reinvent forms with great freedom of style. The third section, entitled "Vallauris, a land of choice for artists", will look at the work of several renowned painters and sculptors of the time - most of whom participated in the artistic avant-gardes of the first half of the 20th century - who stayed in Vallauris for varying lengths of time, including Picasso of course, but also Anton Prinner, Amédée Ozenfant, Marcel Vertès and Edouard Pignon. The last part of the exhibition will retrace "The rebirth of a pottery town" paying tribute to the dynamism of the Vallauris factory-workshops.
As an extension of the exhibition, the Eden room in the centre of Vallauris will present pieces of furniture created in the 1950s, evoking the links between ceramics, design and architecture and the utilitarian function of many creations produced in the town's workshops, with Roger Capron as a major figure.

The exhibition "Vallauris, la ville atelier" benefits from major loans from public collections (Musée national de la céramique de Sèvres / Musée des arts décoratifs / Musée national Marc Chagall / Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne métropole / Roubaix, La Piscine musée d'art et d'industrie André Diligent / C.N.A.P (Centre national des arts plastiques) and private collections.
It will be the subject of a catalogue enriched with several contributions from specialists.
