In 1717, Antoine I Grimaldi, Prince of Monaco, had a summer residence built in the Carnolès district. Attributed to the architects Robert de Cotte and Jacques Gabriel, the palace became a private residence in the 19th century. At the request of its owner, Dr Edward Philips Allis, Tersling refurbished it in 1896. Acquired by the Alpes-Maritimes department in 1961, it has housed the town's Fine Arts Museum since 1977.

However, during the Roman period, the place occupied by the present Palazzo Carnolès and its gardens was probably the seat of a Roman agricultural estate called "Villa Rustica" or "Maritima". The buildings of this domain were placed at the edge of the track. They combined fishing wealth and agricultural land probably planted with olive trees and vines.
