"Belle Époque" is the term used after the First World War to describe this period of peace and carelessness between the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the Great War of 1914-1918. It also refers to the economic boom of this period marked by technological, scientific progress and the industrial revolution. It is the period of invention of cinema, aviation or telephone, as well as an era of strong artistic creativity in literature, music or painting.

Since 1860, the "Belle Époque" dates from the annexation of the County of Nice and the country of Menton to France. Until the First World War, this period was for the entire French Riviera, one of the most brilliant and sumptuous periods in its history.

Attracted by its sunny climate, the beauty of its landscapes, the color of the sea or its bright winter vegetation, which contrasted with the cold, fog or pollution of the industrial revolution, aristocrats from all over the world, Quickly followed by politicians, industrialists, intellectuals and artists of the time, set up their winter quarters there every year for several months.

Whether they are English, Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian or Swedish, who have come to treat themselves or to entertain themselves, they have transposed their luxurious lifestyle. They built elegant villas and lush gardens using the greatest architects of their time ; they developed tennis or golf clubs, casinos, operas, astronomical and sub-observatories ; they have organized memorable parties, concerts, dinners and fireworks ; they have brought in the greatest artists of the moment, dancers, writers, painters and musicians ; they have finally made it possible to invent luxury tourism, that of Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean and palaces, and have made the French Riviera one of the largest tourist destinations in the world.

Let yourself, as in the 19th century, be charmed by the breathtaking panoramas, the side paths with their terraced cultivation of lemon, orange or olive trees, exotic gardens and everywhere a vegetation so the luxuriance is allowed by the exceptional microclimate ; look up and admire the corbels of the villas, the windows and ornaments of the former big hotels or casinos... Enjoy the baths and sunsets and the timeless light that painters have been able to capture so well... Imagine yourself in a crinoline dress or top hat on the Promenade du Midi in Menton, on the beaches of Roquebrune or on the mule tracks of Beausoleil or La Turbie, and savour the present moment.

It is the French Riviera, very close to paradise, as it is still today, shaped by more than 150 years of tourist history !
