The best ice cream in Nice

Tell me which are the best in Nice? I haven’t really got a sweet tooth… But the exception often proves the rule: ice cream. I have a passion for these cold wonders that I consume both summer and winter. Follow in my frosty footsteps, to find the best ice-cream makers in Nice!

A pastry chef conquered by the cold in Nice…

Louis Dubois is not an ice cream maker like the others. Pastry chef at Ritz Fauchon, pastry chef with Pierre Gagnaire, then chef of his own restaurant in Nice, he now delights us with his creations in his new setting, a patisserie and ice cream shop in the heart of Old Nice. The ice creams are made only with the very best ingredients: vanilla from Tahiti, Michel Cluizel chocolate, hazelnuts from a small producer in Piedmont and fresh local fruit! And of course, the cornets are homemade! Just natural taste… And if you’re still tempted, try the delicious pastries.

15, Place Saint-Francois

Ice cream maker and Nice-born – heart and soul…

No unusual mixes here, the focus is on twenty proven traditional flavours. A good mastery of sweetness, quality raw ingredients fruit purees, hazelnut or 100% Italian pistachios, fresh fruit sometimes even from the family garden. The ice creams and sorbets are made by the Nice-born Loris Gallo following all the traditional rules.
The granitas are exquisite! The peach and strawberry – only in season – are to die for!
You can also taste verrines, praline ices, iced cakes and milkshakes – all famous. When you’re in Nice don’t miss this ice cream maker.

54, Avenue de la République

The art of Italian gelateria – the finest example in Nice!

Inventiveness galore in the range of flavours offered in these homemade ice creams. You can taste unusual flavours (baobab, cactus) and original mixtures (saffron, rose water, pistachio chips or crispy choux pastry, fiordilatte, chocolate ganache). The creaminess is perfect, proof of the transalpine know-how of Roberto Francia, the master ice cream maker.
Sorbets are made mostly with fresh fruit – some made with stevia – ice creams with the best ingredients. To prolong the pleasure at home, take away one of their sublime ice cream cakes.

9, avenue Malaussena & 43, avenue Jean Médecin

Savoir know-how in Nice!

The culture of good ice cream is not just the privilege of the Italians. Since 1983 in Savoie and in Nice since 1996, the Veyrat family has been sharing its talent and the delicious flavours of its artisanal ice-cream which among other things offers some original flavours: Italian Lover (hazelnut, white chocolate ganache, pistachio), crème brulée and lemon tart. Colourful flavours showcased by good control of sugar – if you’re like me you’ll appreciate it – and good basic ingredients. Even the cornets are homemade on the spot, and it makes all the difference!

1, rue Sainte-Reparate

A Sicilian ice cream maker to discover in Nice!

Being from Nice, I tend to think that our Gratta Keka is the best granita in the world but it must be said that the « siciliana » is still the Rolls Royce. And here, the many flavours are excellent: almond, lemon, coffee, chocolate, mint, orange… And as for ice cream, the choice is certainly limited, but very good. Don’t hesitate, do as the Sicilians do and taste « il gelato » with the brioche from Sicily, too! There are some very good cannoli for enthusiasts, some suitable for vegans.

An artisanal ice cream maker in Nice!

At the helm of this artisan gelateria, a Turin native passionate about his job and generous with his portions! Here again, quality ingredients and a beautiful range of flavours. Taste the speciality: Cuban coffee. And chocolate ice cream, made with fresh cream, a delight! There are ice cream cakes and lollipops too. A pleasant stop that is off the usual well beaten tourist paths at the gateway to the beautiful musiciandistrict in Nice. No seating, just to take away – but why not eat it sitting on a bench in the neighbouring garden Alsace Lorraine?

Ice cream in Nice

By Jean-Marc NOBILE

Photographer, magazine editor, communication consultant, TV commentator, but first and foremost someone from Nice who loves the region and wants to show you more than just the usual places which can sometimes reduce it to a cliché. Contrary to popular belief the Côte d’Azur is a land of authenticity – and that’s where I get my inspiration!
