Focus on the Cannes International Film Festival

May 12-23, 2020

For more than 70 years, the Cannes Film Festival has been one of the biggest media events in the world. For 12 days, the seaside city thrills to the passions of the 7th art around the iconic climbing of the steps and the famous La Croisette.

12 days of international competition in Cannes, on the Côte d’Azur.

Since 1946, Cannes has hosted the 12-day International Film Festival, where a jury of international talent decides on the awards for the best films of the year. An official competition that takes place in the heart of the famous Palais des Festivals and attracts the attention of the whole world during the opening ceremony and the presentation of the Palme d’Or. Alongside the official selection are other sections like the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, Un Certain Regard, La Semaine de la Critique and above all the Marché du Film

The show doesn’t only take place on the big screen at the Cannes Film Festival!

There is also the walk up the steps, covered with the red carpet that the film personalities tread before each screening. It is a privilege to walk up the 24 steps and there are some rules to be respected! Suits are mandatory for men, long dresses for women and since 2018, selfies are strictly forbidden! All day long they act as an antechamber for screenings in the Palais des Festivals, but it’s the evening screenings which are emblematic, with the throng of photographers and swarm of fans who closely watch the arrival of every star.

If the Festival rhymes with glamour and glitz, it’s also because of the famed parties on La Croisette.

As soon as night falls, La Croisette ignites to the rhythm of the galas where the long dresses flutter on a beach, rooftop or yacht, away from prying eyes. Over the years, they have become unmissable events for the stars, who take the opportunity to combine charity with pleasure – like at the Amfar party at the Eden Roc or the global gift initiative, supported by actress Eva Longoria, which raises funds for underprivileged children.

All about the Cannes Film Festival screenings!

Only a select few are able to attend the evening screenings in the large Louis Lumière auditorium. On the other hand, during the day, depending on the availability of seats, tickets are handed out before each session in front of the Palais des Festivals. To obtain the precious open sesame, you could also try your luck with Cannes Cinephile, which every year offers the possibility of being accredited if you’re passionate about the cinema. Finally, with your feet in the sand, the cinema on the beach offers free screenings of selected films throughout the Festival – and it is open to everyone!
